At Rivers Education Support Centre, our curriculum is designed to provide pupils with a broad, balanced and engaging education. Through a combination of academic, creative, vocational and personal development opportunities, we support pupils to build confidence, develop essential skills and prepare for future learning, employment and independent living.
Key Stage 3
Key Stage 3 provides pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum that develops knowledge, skills and confidence across a range of subjects whilst preparing learners for future study and personal success.
Core Subjects
Mathematics
At Rivers we offer a varied and challenging programme of study focused on fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem solving.
English
Our curriculum develops reading, writing, speaking and listening through a wide range of texts including novels, Shakespeare, poetry and non-fiction writing.
Science
Pupils develop scientific knowledge through Biology and Chemistry topics, investigations, practical work and projects exploring the world around them.
Creative & Practical Subjects
Art
Pupils work with a variety of media and techniques whilst studying topics such as Natural Forms, Architecture, Abstract Art and Portraiture.
Food Technology
Pupils develop practical cooking skills whilst learning about nutrition, hygiene, healthy lifestyles and food preparation.
Physical & Personal Development
Physical Education
Pupils participate in a range of individual and team sports, athletics and fitness activities whilst learning about health and wellbeing.
PSHE
Topics include healthy relationships, mental wellbeing, citizenship, safeguarding, religious education and preparing for adulthood.
Key Stage 4
Key Stage 4 combines academic qualifications, vocational learning and personal development programmes to help pupils achieve recognised qualifications and prepare for their next steps.
Core Subjects
Mathematics
Students follow GCSE Mathematics and Functional Skills pathways to develop essential numeracy and problem-solving skills.
English
Students study GCSE English Language, English Literature and Functional Skills qualifications where appropriate.
Science
Students follow AQA GCSE Biology, developing scientific understanding through theory, practical investigations and examination preparation.
Creative & Practical Subjects
Art
Students build on prior learning through GCSE Art and Design, developing creative, analytical and practical skills.
Textiles
Students work towards City & Guilds qualifications whilst developing practical textile and design skills.
Food Technology
Students gain practical cooking skills and industry knowledge through accredited Food Technology qualifications.
Sport & Physical Development
NCFE Sport Level 2
This qualification provides an introduction to the sport and leisure industry and prepares learners for employment or further study.
Careers, Employability & Life Skills
Employability Skills
Students explore career planning, applications, work experience and workplace rights and responsibilities.
Personal Development
Students study topics including safeguarding, relationships, equality, health, wellbeing, drugs awareness and first aid.
Enrichment Opportunities
Duke of Edinburgh Award
Students have opportunities to develop volunteering, physical, skills and expedition experiences through the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme.
