KS3 Centre News:

On Friday 25th June, we took pupils from KS3 on an Art Trip as part of their studies to the Henry Moore Foundation for Art in Perry Green, Much Hadham.  Having learnt about various elements of his life and works in class, students were able to see first-hand some of impressive giant sculptures on display. They enhanced their understanding of the whole bronze sculpture process from maquette to the finished pieces.

Pride Month

KS4 celebrated Pride month by all staff wearing a top representing the colours of the Rainbow of the LGBTQ flag on Friday 18th.  In YHC lessons, pupils increased their knowledge and understanding of the LGBTQ community and how they can support lesbian, gay and bi peers.

Duke of Edinburgh

The centre had an extremely successful Duke of Edinburgh expedition with some very kind weather! The pupils walked on day one around the Rye Meads nature reserve, navigating a path that was around 15kms in length. The pupils were able to take in some great views and had great fun away from the centre. The second day was around the Standon and Puckeridge area with some trickier navigation and route planning, but the pupils adapted really well and were competent at following the mapped path by the end of the expedition. The group were formally assessed at their final destination in Standon by the D of E assessor for the area and discussed their ups and downs of each leg of the journey. All pupils passed with flying colours and will receive their awards shortly.

Teambuilding

The pupils attended the Edge Outdoors centre to take part in some teamwork and communication tasks to support their coursework. The pupils performed high ropes courses and laser tag working together to either complete the course or work against another team. The pupils evidence from these events has been used to ensure a 100% pass rate in the Level 2 BTEC Certificate in Teamwork and Communication, some pupils have even gone above and beyond this and have achieved the Extended Certificate for the first time in the centres' history.

Outdoor Education

We are a few weeks into the term now and the opportunity to broaden the pupil’s experiences offsite has already incorporated orienteering, Escape rooms and a boxing master class at Hoddesdon Boxing Club.  All of our pupils have represented the centre impeccably and taken some amazing memories from the sessions so far. We still have Canoeing, Mountain Biking and Outdoor cooking to look forward to and is a lovely way to celebrate the end of a positive year.

Virtual Careers Event in April 2021

KS4 hosted a Virtual Careers Event in April 2021 in collaboration with the Careers and Enterprise Company, VolkerWessels UK and MCP Property Services.

These are local Employers based in Hoddesdon and Hertford and are Rivers ESC’s Enterprise Advisers who support our pupils in finding out more about the world of work. More information can be found here: https://www.careersandenterprise.co.uk/ https://www.volkerwessels.co.uk/  https://mcp.community/

Year 11 Pupils were able to practice their interview skills with a range of employees from the different companies, and find out about what is involved in working in the different departments in the organisations such as, Human Resources, Civil Engineering and Plumbing to name but a few.

The pupils also had the opportunity to hear from one of our former pupils, and find out what is involved in being an apprentice, as he managed to gain an apprenticeship after he did the event last year. (Pre Covid).

It was a very successful event where the pupils were really engaged and inspired to hear real life stories about the world of work.
