Virtual Careers Event in April 2021
KS4 recently hosted a Virtual Careers Event in April 2021 in collaboration with the Careers and Enterprise Company, VolkerWessels UK and MCP Property Services.
These are local Employers based in Hoddesdon and Hertford and are Rivers ESC’s Enterprise Advisers who support our pupils in finding out more about the world of work. More information can be found here: https://www.careersandenterprise.co.uk/ https://www.volkerwessels.co.uk/ https://mcp.community/
Year 11 Pupils were able to practice their interview skills with a range of employees from the different companies, and find out about what is involved in working in the different departments in the organisations such as, Human Resources, Civil Engineering and Plumbing to name but a few.
The pupils also had the opportunity to hear from one of our former pupils, and find out what is involved in being an apprentice, as he managed to gain an apprenticeship after he did the event last year. (Pre Covid).
It was a very successful event where the pupils were really engaged and inspired to hear real life stories about the world of work.
Year 11 pupils will enjoy a Leaver's Trip to Thorpe Park on 22nd June. Preparation & planing are under way, with COVID restrictions in mind.
Duke of Edinburgh
Rivers ESC will be running a COVID secure Duke of Edinburgh Expedition on the 27th and 28th May. 5 pupils will be navigating themselves around the local countryside using their map reading skills, to help complete their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. Pupils will be carrying their own equipment and supplies with them and completing a route that starts and finishes at our KS4 Centre. Adaptations this year means that there is no camping element to keep the pupils safe and socially distanced from each other, but the students are still on track to achieve the full award in June.
As part of the Team Building Course, Mr Dent’s classes will be attending Edge Outdoor Adventure Centre on the 17th and 18th May. The aim of these sessions is to provide evidence for the pupil’s coursework and give them an opportunity to work together, communicate and problem solve a range of activities from high ropes, to archery and climbing walls. All Year 11 pupils have been invited to attend, and they have planned the activities themselves as well as researched the centre in line with their coursework.
As part of the new timetable for Year 10 pupils, Mr Dent will be leading outdoor education sessions for all groups after May Half Term. These sessions will involve orienteering the local area, trips to outdoor adventure centres and problem-solving tasks such as escape rooms. These sessions will run until the end of term and will hopefully give the pupils an opportunity to develop skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving away from the classroom and centre.
